Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai 天神橋筋商店街 - All the Temptations of Japans longest Shopping Arcade

See the locations on Treasures of Osaka Google Map

Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street 天神橋筋商店街 stretches approximately 2.6km north to south, and is said to be the longest straight shopping street in Japan. Approx. You find around 600 shops 600 shops, including good old specialty shops, and many restaurants. You may go there on the way to worship at Osaka Temmangu Shrine. Tenjinbashi neighborhood was one of the earliest shopping streets in Osaka. Shops were already lining the area in the early Meiji era (1868-1912).

Ten Ichi (Ten-1-chome, 天神橋1): We start with an open-air shopping street. If we turn into a side street at our right we find an art gallery in Fujihara Building, a brown-brick structure constructed in 1923. Today it houses a graphic design firm on the second floor with an accessory showroom above. The building was used as a set for a TV drama in 2009. The basement is home to Fujihara art gallery アートギャラリーフジハラ, a multi-media space that is only open for special exhibitions. On weekdays, you can enter the main part of the building and discover the artwork in the public areas. There are creative displays everywhere, including a looped recording of a static-filled lecture wafting up from the darkened halls of the basement. The art continues outside as well, as an adjacent parking lot hosts a permanent exhibition of paintings and sculpture attached to the walls.

Window of Fujihara building

Heading back to Tenjinbashisuji we will enter the arcade in the middle of our way.

Entrance of Ten Ichi 天神橋1

If you turn right before entering the arcade you find Torii Miso とりゐ味噌, a shop specializing in miso, established in the Edo era (1603-1868). Heihachiro Oshio, a Confucian scholar, was a regular customer. Torii Miso sells its fermented soybean pastes from wooden barrels. Read more: 100 years of fermenting miso in Osaka. Inside the arcade you discover restaurants.

Ten Ni (Ten-2-chome, 天神橋2):

We are greeted by four dolls suspended from the entrance of the shopping arcade. These are replicas of the mukae ningyo, or welcome dolls, which are adorned to the floating procession of boats during the Tenjin Matsuri, held every July 24th and 25th at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine.

In this part of the arcade you will pass Osaka Chakai 大阪茶会, a green tea shop with an attractive second floor lounge space with free wi-fi. Visitors can enjoy the drink menu from the cup of their choice, with over 100 different varieties to choose from on shelves that line the interior. Cups include mug cups, matchawan (traditional tea bowls) and free-style cups made by artists from western Japan. See more pictures of Osaka Chakai.

Later on your way you probably see people queuing at Nakamuraya 中村屋コロッケ, famous for its hot croquettes and ground meat cutlets. And you will pass Maruichi Bakery, where you get success-wishing buns, which are popular among students taking examinations.

Ten San (Ten-3-chome, 天神橋3):

Kunkundou 薫々堂, a Japanese sweets shop, has been here for over 150 years. The shop makes rice cakes and dry confectionary for Temmangu. Also popular are their novelty sweets such as “Hatsutenjin”, associated with a rakugo piece. Walk on and find Bunkyudo イナガキハイツ. An ordinary stationery shop, but you get here the “Toryanse Pencil” and “Success Eraser”, useful for students who search success in examination. You also discover the wooden storefront of Kurume, a store specializing in traditional, high quality wooden items including chopsticks, shoehorns, ear picks, and tableware.

Narita-ya 成田屋呉服店 may be the only kimono shop where kimono are sold in auction style (from 14.30 every Sunday). Aiming further north you can enjoying the crisp crust of a hand-baked fish shaped cake of “Taimu”. You will also pass Kitaoka, a shop specializing in curtains since the Taisho era (1912-1926). if you turn right soon after passing the railway subway of Osaka Loop line, you will arrive at Purara Tenma ぷららてんま Market.

Tsuruhashi 鶴橋 - Flavours of Korea in Osaka

See the locations on Tsuruhashi 鶴橋 Google Map

All around Tsuruhashi station, under the train tracks, there is a labyrinth of Koresn market stalls. You can find all sorts of imported items, k-pop goods and Korean food. But this is not yet Korea Town. A few more blocks away you will find Miyukimori Shrine, which is the entrance to Korea Town, also known as Miyukimori Shopping Street (御幸森商店街). A three hundred-meter-long shopping street with about 150 Korean food stores, restaurants and clothing stores. In both areas you will find some of the finest Korean food in Japan, Kimchi of every type, for example soft-shelled crab kimchi, cucumber kimchi or celery kimchi. Outside Tsuruhashi station an entire side street is devoted to Korean barbeque (yakiniku), for this street you leave the West gates of the station.

Most young people in Tsuruhashi can't speak Korean anymore. They all converse in Japanese. Tsuruhashis population comes from South and North Korea. Korea was a Japanese colony from 1910 to 1945. At that time, the country was extremely poor and many Koreans migrated to Japan in their search for a better life. During World War II, Japan recruited a great number of Koreans to do forced labor in coal mines and the industries. After the war, in 1948, a rebellion broke out on the southern-most Korean island of Jeju. It was stimulated by agents from North Korea - but the Jeju islanders didn't feel that they wanted to be ruled by Syngman Rhee, the dictator from Seoul. They wanted to live their own way. Rhee cracked down on the rebels. Thousands were killed. The ones who made it out alive fled to Japan. They settled in the Koreatown of Tsuruhashi. Kim Jong-un’s mother, Ko Yong-hui, was born and raised in Tsuruhashi until her family repatriated when she was about 10 years old.

Gokura-mon, the Great West Gate

If you look for the peaceful tranquility of a holy place in Osaka, Shitennō-ji (四天王寺; also Arahaka-ji, Nanba-ji or Mitsu-ji) is the place to be, one of the first Buddhist temples in Japan, if not the first one. The sound of a gong brings you in a mood of meditation and you forget the buzy town around you. The construction of this temple was finished in 593 after Prince Shōtoku had invited three Korean Baekje carpenters for this work. Prince Shōtoku was known for his Buddhist faith when Buddhism was not widespread in Japan. Afterwards the temple's buildings burned down several times throughout the centuries. therefore most of the present structures are from 1963, when the Shitennoji was completely reconstructed. The temple name points to the four Buddhist gods representing the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west.

Gojūnotō, the pagoda

The complex inside the walls consists of a five-story pagoda (Gojūnotō 五重塔), a main Golden Pavilion (Kondō 金堂) housing an image of the Bodhisattva Kannon, and a Kōdō (Lecture Hall, 四天王寺 講堂). There are a covered corridor and three gates (the Deva Gate, the Western Gate 西重門 and the Eastern Gate). Up to the top of the pagoda you can climb five-storey spiral stairs. Then you walk out onto a balcony-like space, which offers a 360 degree view of the temple and the distant mountains. Surrounding this central complex are the Great South Gate (Nandaimon 南大門), the Great East Gate (Higashi-no-ō'mon) and the Great West Gate (Nishi-no-ō'mon), also known as Gokuraku-mon (極楽門). A short walk to the west you find the Gokuraku-jodo Garden (極楽浄土, Western Paradise), that was designed based on descriptions of the Western Paradise of the Amida Buddha. A stone torii is the Eastern Gate to the gokuraku-jōdo.

Namba and Nipponbashi: Paradise for Shoppers and Otaku

See the locations on Namba and Nipponbashi Google Map

Located around Namba Station, Minami (南, "South") is one of Osaka's two major city centers. It is the city's most famous entertainment district and offers a lot of dining and shopping choices.

Dotonbori: this street runs parallel to the Dotonbori canal. At night it is lit by hundreds of neon lights and mechanized signs, including the famous Glico Running Man sign and Kani Doraku crab sign. Some restaurants are open for 24 hours. Instead of eating crab meat here you may do it at nearby Kuromon Ichiba Market, where you will meet the locals.

Shinsaibashisuji 心斎橋筋商店街 and Ebisubashi-suji Shopping Arcades: Nearly 600 metres long the arcade Shinsaibashisuji is Osakas shopping center number one, a mix of chain retail stores, trendy boutiques, expensive department stores and many fashion labels. Open from around 10-11 am until around 18.30-21 pm. Read more on the official website. It has a long history. In the mid-18th century, when kimono shop Matsuya (currently Daimaru department store) opened, it was already a shopping district, with shops dealing in furniture, used books, musical instruments, etc. At Dotombori, Shinsaibashi-suji becomes Ebisubashi-suji. Amerikamura アメリカ村, locally known as Amemura: This is the city's best known center of youth fashion and contains hundreds of small, inexpensive boutiques. During the 70s, warehouses in Amerikamura were renovated to sell imported goods including vintage clothes, jeans, second-hand records and many other items from the West Coast of the United States. Because of the uniqueness of the area, TV and media introduced the place nationwide and "Amemura" (Amerikamura) became a birthplace of the latest fashion trends. It is a good place to see teenage fashion. Read more on official website.

Hozenji Yochocho 호젠지 요코초 and Hozenji temple: At Hozenji Yochocho, a narrow, stone-paved lane next to Dotombori Street, you get an impression of the Osaka of the old days. It is ined with small food shops and cafes. Japanese people know Hozenji Yokocho from Sakunosuke Oda's novel "Meoto Zenzai" (Sweet Bean Broth for Two). It is also famous for the moss-covered Fudo-myo statue, known as Mizukake Fudo.

Den Den Town でんでんタウン / Nipponbashi 日本橋: Den Den Town or Denki no machi (電気の町) is an alternate name for Nipponbashi 日本橋. This place is Osakas electronic shopping paradise, packed with discount stores, a place where the dreams of video game and tech geeks come true, especially in Otaku Road. Otaku is the japanese word for people with obsessive interests, commonly it is used for anime and manga fans. Den Den Town has numerous shops of manga and anime retailers and other otaku-related goods such as Mandarake, Tora no Ana, and Osaka Gundams — a two-story all-Gundam outlet. Nipponbashi also features numerous maid cafes and cosplay cafes. Read Groovy Osaka: Nipponbashi and Nipponbashi: An Otaku-town in Kansai. Doguya-suji near Namba Station is Osaka's shopping destination for professional and amateur chefs. This short arcade sells all kinds of cooking accessories, from restaurant grade stove tops to staff uniforms to pots, pans and dishes.

National Bunraku Theater: Bunraku performances are usually held in three week runs in January, April, June, July/August and November. Bunraku is similar to kabuki but performed using meter tall puppets. The National Bunraku Theater is considered the nation's most prestigious, and in addition to shows offers free seminars throughout the year. English earphones are available.

Shochikuza Theater: Kabuki performances are usually held in five runs per year, each lasting between three to four weeks. Ticket prices vary by performance but typically range from 4000 to 15000 yen. The Shochikuza Theater is the prime location to see kabuki performances in Osaka. It is a Western style theater that opened in 1923 and has a seating capacity of just over 1000.

Hozenji Yokocho Alley Admission to the temple is free. Restaurant hours vary. With Hozenji Temple at one end and with more than 60 traditional restaurants and izakaya along it's narrow path, this alley retains an old time atmosphere reminiscent of Kyoto's Pontocho. Be sure to visit Hozenji Temple where local merchants and visitors alike pour water over the temple's statues for luck.
